What Do You See?

When Frozen 2 was released there was much excitement in my home.  In fact, this was the only movie that I purchased tickets in advance to ensure the family could go on opening day.  It was all worth it when the movie turned out to be great and my daughter said, “Momma, I loved it, can we watch it again?”  Frozen 1 is one of my favorite Disney movies because of the message that love conquers all so I was hoping Frozen 2 would not disappoint and it didn’t.  In the first movie it was a sister’s selfless kindness and unconditional love that won in the end.  Selfless kindness and unconditional love?  Sound familiar?

In similar fashion to Frozen 1’s block buster hit of “Let it Go” which every little girl, boy and parent on the planet knows by heart, Frozen 2 showcases a song called “Show Yourself.”  As Elsa is calling into “the Unknown” she feels something pulling her and begins to sing.  Below are some of the lyrics…

Every inch of me is trembling, but not from the cold…Something is familiar, like a dream I can reach but not quite hold…I can sense you there, like a friend I’ve always known…I’m arriving, and it feels like I am home…I have always been a fortress, cold secrets deep inside…You have secrets too, but you don’t have to hide…

As my daughter began to learn the lyrics of this new song, she started by repeating them over and over again. We played the song over and over and over again until she gets it right (her idea, not mine).  Inevitably, I learn it too.  It is a fun game of memorization for her and she’s darn good at it.  When I took a minute to think about the song, it occurred to me, sometimes this is how I begin to approach God.  I talk about myself and how I’m feeling.  God, I’m far from you.  It’s been awhile since I’ve spoken to you, it feels cold, I feel cold.  But there is something and a part of me that keeps coming back to you because you always feel like home to me.  However, wait, I can’t get too close because you are God and if you know the things I’ve done or the deep things in my heart you aren’t going to like that.  But, you’re God.  I forgot; you know everything.  Who am I kidding?  And, I bet you have secrets too that you haven’t shared with anyone.  Boy do I have a lot of questions for you God!

It is okay if it has been awhile since you’ve spoken to God.  There’s no time like the present right?  God is waiting for you; He always waits for you.

Let’s listen to more of the lyrics…

Show yourself, I’m dying to meet you…Show yourself, it’s your turn…Are you the one I’ve been looking for all of my life?…Show yourself, I’m ready to learn…I’ve never felt so certain, all my life I’ve been torn…

God please, I need to see you.  Would you show yourself to me?  I’m hurting.  I have this problem that I need to figure out, which direction should I go?  How should I handle this situation?  How will I ever figure any of this out?  Please.  Show yourself.  I am dying to meet you.  I need to see you though to believe.  Show me your scarred hands Lord.  I think you are the One my soul has been longing for.  I’ve been searching all of my life and I am tired.  I think I’m ready to learn but how?

We fill our lives with so many thoughts, people and things.  Always keeping busy, running from one thing to another.  For what?  But God, He is always there, always present.  Although He is unseen with our human eyes, we can feel Him with our heart.  God can satisfy your heart and your deepest desires.  Start a conversation with Him and see for yourself.

But I’m here for a reason, could it be the reason I was born?…I have always been so different, normal rules did not apply…Is this the day? Are you the way? I finally find out why…Show yourself, I’m no longer trembling…

Okay God, I am here for a reason.  I just know it.  You have placed a purpose in my heart that is undeniable.  There are things in my heart that need to be dealt with.  Questions I have that need answered.  I have so many questions!  Is that okay?  Please, show yourself.  I do believe You are the way; I am no longer afraid.  Thank you Lord.

Sometimes God brings you full circle until your heart is completely settled.  He can and will settle your heart.  Did you ever have a problem that needed prayer?  Do you call someone and ask them to pray or do you pray yourself?  Work it out with Him, no one else.  Go to the One who created you.  And wait.  Wait in silence, it’s okay.  Don’t be distracted while you’re focusing on Him.  Don’t be afraid.  Go to Him.  Don’t be afraid to speak to Him directly.

Here I am, I’ve come so far…You are the answer I’ve waited for all of my life…Oh, show yourself, let me see who you are…Come to me now, open your door…Don’t make me wait one moment more…Come to me now, open your door…Don’t make me wait one moment more…Grow yourself into something new.

Here I am Lord.  I have come so far; my confidence is in You.  You are everything.  I want to see you face-to-face.  I want to hear your voice.  The doors of my heart are open to receive anything you have for me.  Please come and dwell in me, I will follow You and allow You to mold and shape me into something new.  Today is a new beginning.  Thank you Lord.

This part of the song sounds like a lover beckoning their beloved.  Don’t make me wait one moment more.  Do you remember when you were first in love with your spouse?  You couldn’t wait to see them next?  God is like that when He thinks of you.  He can’t wait to be with you, for you to sit with Him.  He has so much for you.  He has so many things He wants to share with you.  Open the doors of your heart so He may enter.

So, I named this blog, What Do You See?  I want to ask you a few questions…

What do you see when you look out into the ocean?

What do you see when you look up in the sky at dusk and the sky is filled with beautiful pastels as if painted just for you?

What do you see when you look into the eyes of a loved one?

What do you see when you take in a majestic landscape or a mountain vista?

What do you see when you hear a song?

I believe God is all around you.  He’s showing Himself to you.  He always has been.  He speaks to you.  He is whispering your name and telling you how much He loves you.  It is up to you to respond to Him.  To whisper back, hello.  To acknowledge Him in these places and allow Him to reveal even more of Himself to you.  To have a conversation with Him and ask, God, is that you speaking to me through this song?  God is that you speaking to me through my loved one?  Please, acknowledge Him, ask Him.  He’ll respond.

Psalm 100 verse 3 tells us, “Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture.”

Job 24 verse 13 tells us, “Wicked people rebel against the light. They refuse to acknowledge its ways or stay in its paths.”

Luke 12 verse 8 tells us, “I tell you the truth, everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, the Son of Man will also acknowledge in the presence of God’s angels.”

Acknowledge Him and He will acknowledge you.  He will commune with you.  Like Queen Elsa sings in Frozen 2, Show Yourself, He is showing Himself.  Share yourself with Him, this will lead to a deeper relationship with Him.
